This spring, several Brighton High School DECA students had the opportunity to travel to Orlando, Florida, to compete at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC), one of the most prestigious events in student business and leadership.
Held from April 26 to April 30, ICDC welcomed over 293,000 high school DECA members from across the globe to showcase their skills in marketing, finance, hospitality and business management. After qualifying through their award-winning performances at the state level, Brighton’s DECA students represented Michigan with professionalism, passion and pride.
Throughout the week, students participated in competitive events, leadership academies and networking sessions with industry professionals. Between competition rounds, they explored Orlando’s famous attractions, including Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, and attended keynote speeches and recognition sessions.
“The energy was unreal,” said Kate Reed, a sophomore at Brighton. “It was amazing to meet students from all over the country who are just as passionate about business as we [Brighton’s ICDC members] are.”
ICDC is not only a time to grow and learn about business but a time to destress from school. Media Leader and junior Alyssa Ortega said, “Everyone worked incredibly hard to get to ICDC, and we were able to create connections with people from all over the country. I loved being able to work on my business skills, but also be able to relax and hang out with my friends.”
When asked why people should join DECA, Ortega said, “DECA will benefit everyone. You learn how to public speak, think fast and come up with different ways to solve different problems. Whether you join for fun or to compete at a high level, everyone will be able to find their place.”
