The Brighton High School varsity boys soccer team capped off an exciting 2025 season by celebrating a long-standing team tradition: awarding the coveted “Men of the Match” titles. Every few games, one player stands out on the field—showcasing leadership, grit or game-changing plays that drive the team forward. Those select few earn not only recognition from teammates and coaches but also the honor of carrying the team’s gold-plated belt, a symbol of excellence and pride until the next standout performance.
Throughout the 2025 season, four players earned this distinction: Reece Meyer, Alex Levoska, Benny Booth and Giosue DeSanto. Each of these athletes was asked what they believed led to them receiving the title of “Man of the Match.”
Reece Meyer – Captain, Goalkeeper, Senior

Although many times the “Man of the Match” award goes to the highest scorers, for goalkeeper and senior Reece Meyer, being named “Man of the Match” came after an unforgettable game on Sept. 2 against Canton. Meyer made 13 saves, securing a 0–0 tie despite relentless pressure from the opposing offense. His calm command of the defense and sharp instincts between the posts kept Brighton alive in a game that could have easily slipped away.
“To me it means that I took upon the role the team needed and was able to pick up the weight for teammates and execute my job to a tee,” Meyer said.
As captain, he led by example, embodying the heart and resilience of the team. His victory anthem? “We Are the Champions” by Queen—a fitting choice for a player who continually rose to the occasion when it mattered most.
Alex Levoska – Left Winger, Senior

Senior Alex Levoska claimed his “Man of the Match” honor on Sept. 11 against Novi, after scoring both goals in a crucial win for Brighton. His speed down the wing and composure in front of the net made him an offensive powerhouse that day.
“It means a lot to me because I have always dreamed of achieving something like this since freshman year,” Levoska said. “I’m very excited to be one of the ‘men of the match’ this season.”
His dedication throughout his Brighton career culminated in this recognition—proof of his steady growth and impact on the field. When it comes to his victory song, Levoska chose AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”—a perfect reflection of his electrifying presence in the match that earned him the belt.
Benny Booth – Striker, Junior

Junior striker Benny Booth earned his “Man of the Match” title on Sept. 29 against Churchill after scoring two goals and drawing a penalty, playing a major role in leading Brighton to another strong performance. Known for his energy and relentless drive, Booth’s ability to create opportunities and finish plays helped ignite the team’s offense.
“This means that I have put in the work to be able to carry the name,” Booth said.
His choice of a victory anthem—“Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes—captures the confident, hardworking and powerful tone he brings every time he steps onto the field.
Giosue DeSanto – Center Back, Junior

Playing as a center defender, Giosue DeSanto anchored the defense with a commanding performance that earned him his “Man of the Match” distinction on Oct. 6 against Rochester Adams. According to DeSanto, he was “absolute locks on defense” and even contributed to a key goal with a massive clearance kick that shifted the game’s momentum.
“It means a lot, and it’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a freshman and was first coming to Brighton,” he said. His chosen song, “Over My Dead Body” by Drake, reflects the fierce mentality that defines his playstyle: determined, fearless and unbreakable under pressure.
More Than a Title
While the gold-plated belt and social media shoutouts are exciting, the “Man of the Match” tradition represents something much deeper for Brighton’s varsity boys soccer team. It celebrates teamwork, perseverance and the ability to rise above challenges—values that define not only these four standout athletes but Brighton Athletics as a whole.
As the 2025 season closes, Brighton’s “Men of the Match” leave behind more than just stats—they leave a legacy of leadership, effort and pride that will continue to inspire future Bulldogs on the soccer field.
