DECA is a club at BHS that focuses on business and marketing. The club was established in 1946 with the purpose of preparing students for a future in marketing as well as teaching them important life skills such as public speaking, teamwork and team building.
DECA students show off their abilities at competitions with various events such as hospitality, tourism, marketing, finance, management and entrepreneurship. Partners have 30 minutes to come up with an idea to fix the prompted problem within their chosen category. Once time is up, the idea is presented to a judge that will score how well the problem was solved.
Some of the aspects of DECA that make it fun to join are not only the social and career aspects but also the trips that members get to go on for competitions.
“The trips that we go on do influence people to come in sometimes because we do a yearly trip for states to Detroit, and then the international trip changes areas, but mostly it’s California, Florida or Georgia,” said Kevin Heggie, vice president of chapter development for DECA at BHS.
Another aspect of DECA that appeals to students is the different events to choose from during competitions.
“Some specific events that Brighton always has a lot of people in are sports and entertainment marketing…[and]this year apparel and accessories, so fashion marketing is also a big one,” said Heggie.
All of these aspects combined make DECA a rewarding club that prepares students for their futures and improves their marketing and communication skills.
