Brighton High School’s new MedLife club is working to provide students with an opportunity to make an impact on their community and beyond. MEDLIFE is a nonprofit organization with the goal of helping low-income families gain access to healthcare, education and safe housing through fundraising.
When asked why she started the club, junior Lila Dolecki—the club’s founder—said, “Over the summer, I was looking for ways to get involved and volunteer opportunities and found the organization MEDLIFE. I want to pursue a career in the medical field, and after some further research into their work and values, they lined up with what I want to do after high school. I knew I wanted to be a part of MEDLIFE, so I reached out about starting a chapter, and after a few months, we became an official club!”
When asked about the club’s main values, Dolecki said, “Our most important value is helping those stuck in the cycle of poverty break free and improve their quality of life. We believe in sustainability, and MEDLIFE’s approach ensures that the communities they help receive year-round patient care and sustainable community development projects.”
While the organization mainly focuses on global efforts, Brighton’s MedLife club focuses on helping their local community. Dolecki said, “There are people in our local community who need help, and part of our main goal as a chapter is to make an impact locally.”
Members have also been granted the opportunity to travel outside the country.
“This summer, we have the opportunity to travel to Peru and see firsthand how the money we raise makes an impact worldwide,” Dolecki said.
“We want to make a difference while making sure our members have fun,” she said.
With bi-weekly meetings in Mrs. Remstad’s room (C05), members will work together to raise money, volunteer, host fundraisers, work with local businesses and have social events both in and out of school to contribute to the cause and help make a global impact.
