This year, Brighton High School is trying something new with the scheduling process. In the past, scheduling has taken place in the spring; however, this year it took place in December. Last year, there were some problems with student schedules that had to be resolved right before the start of the school year. Starting scheduling earlier is supposed to stop anything like that from happening again. This poses a controversial question—is scheduling in December or scheduling in the spring better?
Aubrey Blush thinks that scheduling in the spring is better than scheduling in December for a variety of reasons. First of all, one of the main reasons scheduling so early in the year isn’t great is because of the freshmen. They will not have completed their first semester of high school before they have to decide classes for the following year.
Freshman Katie Gray said, “I don’t like scheduling this early because I haven’t even taken some of my second semester classes, and how will I know what to take if I haven’t experienced all of my classes?”
Another reason that scheduling in the spring is easier is because many people are indecisive and need more time to decide on which classes to take.
Sophomore Sami Vreeland said, “I don’t know if I should take AP Biology or AP Chem, and the decision is tough because I haven’t experienced the majority of honors chem in order to make a solid decision.”
This seems to be a common problem this year because many students feel that scheduling is too soon and would rather have it be later on.
Gabby Giorgio feels that scheduling in December is far superior to scheduling in spring. Some students had issues with scheduling this year and were forced to rearrange their schedule right before the start of the school year. Scheduling in December means students can fix their schedules before the start of the next school year. Plus, the end of the school year is stressful enough, with exams and projects. By scheduling in December, one can schedule stress free. It seems like Gabby is playing a losing game, though, because she could only find one student who agreed with her.
Sophomore Mia Weinraub said, “I think scheduling in December is a good idea because it gives kids a longer time to talk to their counselor. This way, if they change their mind, it is easier to fix.”
An Instagram poll taken by The BHS Times indicates that 69% of students feel that scheduling should take place in spring, making Aubrey this week’s winner. Gabby and Aubrey are officially tied, but Gabby has high hopes for 2025.
