Despite its small size, the Brighton High School alpine ski team soared to new heights this season. With just seven athletes on each team, both the boys and girls teams built strong bonds that carried them through an impressive winter.
The girls team dominated all season, winning all ten of their meets before the state competition and finishing first at regionals, which they celebrated by shaving their coach’s head. The team also scored big at the Kensington Lakes Activities Association championship meet on Feb. 9, where both the girls and boys earned conference titles.
“I think the thing I will remember the most about this season is my girls team winning every race,” sophomore Kendall DeKeyser said. “This is a really special team and a really special year for us.”
The boys team also performed well, placing second in most of their races, which also earned them a spot at states, where they finished fifth with 193 points.
While the teams found success in competition, the season was just as much about the memories made off the course. From long training days to team bonding, the connections between teammates played an important role in their success.
“The highlight of the season for me was going to Nubs Nob [Ski Resort] in January and just having so much fun with my team while training,” sophomore Zoe Frincke said.
For many athletes, skiing is more than just competition; it’s about growth, mindset and passion for the sport.
“Skiing in one word is ‘kaizen,’ meaning gradual improvement,” junior Jacob Sutherland, citing classic Japanese philosophy, said. “The thing that keeps me coming back is the relaxation, along with the fun workout and views.”
The team’s positive energy helped create an environment where everyone could improve and feel included.
“You don’t have to be the best skier to join,” senior Madelynn LaFontaine. “It’s really about learning, growing and having fun.”
