The Brighton High School junior varsity girls field hockey team had quite the season this year, with a record of 6-3-3. The field hockey team experienced a significant change, competing for the first year as a MHSAA sport after recently having been converted into an official sport instead of a club at BHS.
They started off the season with three losses and only one win, which would inevitably cause doubt in the team’s ability. However, they would proceed to go on a four-game winning streak after getting three ties and a win. Even though this streak was quite the performance, the JV team does not participate in regionals or states.
The team not only had a four-game winning streak but a two-game cancellation streak, and a third cancellation before that. This meant they never faced the Dearborn team nor the Edsel Ford team due to the lack of team members and over-scheduling, respectively.
On another note, the team not only improved their performance at the end of the season but also improved their bonding and teamwork. Team captain Adelyn Compton talked about how the team really bonded this year compared to last year.
“I think our team bonded a lot better than I kind of expected and a lot better than it did last year,” Compton said.
This team bonding and cooperation inevitably fueled their performance this season, enabling them to perform as a whole, as Compton said, “being just one and being together.” Their growth in performance and team bonding allowed them to redeem themselves in the latter half of the season.
