Laughter, conversation and the sound of golf balls cracking through the air filled Topgolf on Oct. 30 as aspiring members of the print industry gathered for a night of creativity and connection. Hosted by Graphic Media Alliance (GMA), the event brought together students from across Michigan and industry professionals for a one-of-a-kind opportunity that blended career exploration with friendly competition.
Graphic Media Alliance, a non-profit organization that supports the Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky graphic communications community, hosted the event to foster the growth of a new generation in the ever-growing print industry. Attendees enjoyed the chance to learn more about the industry from professionals in a relaxed setting, all while practicing their golf swings.
“I think that it gave me more insight on the actual world after high school,” said Brighton High School senior Aurora Theodougherty, who attended the event this year. “We don’t really get out there enough.”
Between golf swings, students chatted with representatives from companies, such as Canon, and schools, such as Ferris State University. Industry veterans and upcomers alike gave insight into the current state of the industry and where it is going.
“It was an interesting experience as it was a helpful event, as it put students right next to high-level employees and CEOs of major companies, which was a huge help as I, like many people, find that to be intimidating,” senior Malakai Kilduff said, recounting his experience after previously attending the event last year.
By combining a casual, social atmosphere with real-world guidance, GMA hopes to inspire the next generation to join the ever-aging industry and to see the vast potential of this field. With the presence of advancing technology and design, the need for a new generation of individuals continues to grow every day.
As the night wrapped up with laughter, a few impressive golf shots and an unexpected victory by students, the message was clear: the future of print is bright, and the next generation is ready to make its mark.
