When staff members from the Detroit Lions came to visit Brighton High School, senior Jillian Weaver—like her varsity flag football teammates—thought it was for promotional content over a recent ceremony where Brighton High School’s flag football team was honored at a Lions game.
Instead, Weaver learned that she had been selected alongside just 31 other talented athletes nationwide to be flown to San Francisco for the NFL Girls Flag Football Showcase, a high school showcase, on Feb. 3, 2026. Like other nominees, she was chosen specifically by NFL teams. This event is a huge deal, especially to its participants.
“It’s honestly mind blowing still, and I haven’t fully grasped it,” Weaver said.
Weaver, who has played both running back and wide received in the past, said she is both nervous and excited to participate in this occasion.
Girls flag football, which has only recently gained national momentum, was first introduced at BHS in 2024. Ever since it commenced, the team led by Coach Brian Lemons has been very successful, making it all the way to the state championships in 2025. Weaver, who only joined the flag football team last spring, continues to play club volleyball as well. Her success highlights her commitment to both of her energy-demanding sports.
“I’m super grateful to my coaches, other teammates and the Lions for providing this opportunity and letting me experience this,” Weaver said.
