Brighton High School’s track and field team had its final meet on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. The meet took place at Brighton, where they faced Northville and lost 48-89 in men’s varsity and 54-83 in women’s. This final meet was also Senior Night, where the team’s seniors were celebrated for their hard work and dedication. The season was successful overall, with Brighton winning four out of their five meets. At the final meet, some athletes and coaches expressed their feelings on track and the 2025 spring season.
Katie Gray, a high jumper, pole vaulter and sprinter, said, “It’s fun and it’s different from my usual sport. The people on the teams are very nice and fun to be around as well. We get to practice outside, which is nice on the sunny days, and despite being injured, I get to be around my friends and cheer people on.”
Fellow pole vaulter and sprinter Nathen Thie shared a similar perspective.
“Track is a competitive but low-pressure sport,” Thie said. “There’s a large variety of events to try and see what you’re good at and really work on them. The team is also very supportive, and you’re guaranteed to find a good group of people to hang out with.”
Many athletes shared how unique their experience in track and field was. The sport includes many different activities that create such a diverse group of people, yet many competitors still forged strong connections.
“Track is kind of like a family. We all cheer for each other and are supportive for each guy’s individual success. It’s really just a great time to compete and hang out with this awesome group of athletes,” said Tyler Outlaw, a distance runner.
Addison Hamilton, high jumper and sprinter, said, “It’s my second family. Everyone is incredibly caring and supportive. No matter how you do, you always have someone cheering you on and pushing you to do your best.”
Addison Payne, distance and sprint runner, said, “Track is a family. It really challenges everyone mentally and physically, and the memories you make during the season are ones you’ll never forget! I’m so grateful for this team!”
Not only did the athletes on the team say how much they love their team and sport, but the coaches also said they feel the same way.
Coach Etter, the head girls coach, said, “I love coaching track and field because it is more than athletics. It is a sport that challenges your emotional, physical and mental health while having a family environment. I love coaching and connecting with the athletes and creating memories that will last a lifetime.”
