Brighton High School’s student news site, The BHS Times, earned eight awards in the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association’s 2026 Individual Category competition for Division 1 news writing. The award winners were announced in an online ceremony on April 30, 2026. The BHS Times earned the following awards:
1st Place in Sports News Story: “‘No limits’: BHS volleyball program honors cancer survivors, including teammate” by Paige Bierlein
2nd Place in Sports News Story: “‘One family, earn it’: Brighton varsity girls field hockey seals their first win as an official MHSAA team” by Paige Bierlein
Honorable Mention in News Story: “‘Skip Starbucks, donate the five bucks’: BHS raises over $36,000 for Gleaners Community Food Bank” by Nimrie Ramsdell
Honorable Mention in News Analysis: “‘All of us have that responsibility of making a difference’: Dr. Irene Butter returns to share experience living through the Holocaust” by Weston Long
Honorable Mention in Bylined Opinion Article: “Opinion: Why AI may not actually be primed to take over the universe” by Nicholas Kafkakis
Honorable Mention in In-Depth Feature Article: “A new age of teenage rebellion: Explaining the rise of destructive social media trends)” by Ari Hickman
Honorable Mention in In-Depth Feature Article: “The fall of Honors American Literature: How higher-level ELA classes are evolving to fit shifting educational priorities“ by Gavin Hoeh
Honorable Mention in Sports Feature Article: “Equestrians with Disabilities program allows Brighton student to participate on 2025 equestrian team” by Gavin Hoeh
Senior and editor-in-chief Ari Hickman was also recognized as a member of the MIPA’s 2026 Student Journalist Staff, a cohort of top graduating seniors involved in student media from across the state of Michigan.
